Weird

We all learnt the rule "i before e, except after c, but e before i when sounding like eigh as in neighbour or weigh".

So why is weird e before i?! I was trying to correct Keiko's spelling of the word and thoroughly confused myself in the process. Like when you stare at a word too long and it becomes nonsense. Try it with 'uncle' or 'house'.

I guess weird is the weird exception.

Even Keiko's name follows the rule, and she's Japanese!
